| I am asked routinely about the differences in purchasing a male puppy versus a female puppy. So, I thought I'd just post what has been my experience through the years of owning and breeding dogs. A lot of people are under the assumption that somehow females will be sweeter or more affectionate as companions. It's been my observation that usually females are more dominating and independent than males. Females participate in behaviors such as fighting to establish who is in charge and most of the fights will ensue between two females. Of course, I've occasionally disrupted fights between two males, as well, but it's very seldom, most of the time it's between two females or in some incidences a female will instigate a fight with a male to prove her position in the "pecking order". This innate trait of being protective of her position though, serves her well, because it is SHE that has the babies and is protective, responsible and attentive to her young. On the other hand, males are usually more affectionate and outgoing. They are attentive and seek your attention as well. They become very attached to their people. Most of the time they are quite accepting of other pets, too. Through the years I've observed that most males are easily motivated by praise and are eager to please, which makes training them easier. By neutering a male early, they rarely exhibit secondary sexual behavior such as "marking" their territory. Once neutered they no longer have the higher testosterone level of an intact male and don't have the "marking" behavior. The house training of a neutered male is the same as house training a female. Of course, it's fun to have the little female puppies that can wear bows and cute little outfits but now they have a great variety of clothes, hats, sunglasses and such for the little boys. I personally LOVE the little caps and visors on these little guys!!! So.........with all that said, it's a personal choice to choose whichever sex of puppy you want......but it might give you an insight as to the pros and cons of each sex. I've had both and I love them ALL! Like I tell everyone............ "It's the ONLY true love that money can buy!!!" |
